Kirkland Named “Tree City” 7th Year Running

March 26th, 2009

Kirkland, Washington has been named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor the City’s commitment to community forestry. It is the seventh year Kirkland has received this national recognition. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. Kirkland has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. About Us

Sustainable September is a premiere GREEN business and community program located in and around East King County, Washington

Mission

Sustainable September, is a non-profit organization with an overall mission to promote Eastside businesses and organizations who are committed to growing the local economy and practicing environmental stewardship.

Background

In 2006, the Kirkland Chamber united key business and community leaders to discuss issues relating to the concepts of environmental sustainability and responsible economic growth. From our discussions, it became clear that a forum was needed to further explore and develop this important relationship. With the support of local stakeholders, organizations, and businesses we concluded that East King County, Washington could be a leader in the promotion and implementation of 'Green' business objectives, programs and resources.

We decided to focus our efforts around a month-long program of learning targeting both businesses and consumers and branded the experience, Sustainable September. We are pleased to announce that given the success of our 2007 Sustainable September pilot program, the Washington State Department of Ecology has made an even greater commitment to this year’s event and provided additional grant money. The Kirkland Chamber of Commerce is proud to once again help direct, grow and manage this outstanding program.

For 2008, our year long program with a focus on the month of September will reach a greater share of businesses and organizations that are interested in green business practices. We will increase awareness among an even greater number of consumers who want to learn more about sustainable products, services and programs. This is an opportunity to reach both Eastside businesses and consumers with your eco-messages, sustainable programs, green services and products.

We are targeting a significant share of businesses and residents in Kirkland and other communities in East King County. Our marketing and communication efforts will include a dynamic redesigned website, print and online media advertising, newspaper articles, municipal mailings, event signage, storefront posters, and other compelling collateral materials.
